Guys I’ve done alot of work to my car and she went back to being bad. So after 3 shifts it feels fuel starved. So Im thinking it could be exhaust problems. Heres a pic of my exhaust. Would the exhaust cause this and if I remove it would it run better?

It’ll probably run better, but loss of high rpm power is more likely a clogged cat. If you have an ir thermometer it should be at least a 100f hotter right after the cat than before when it’s all warmed up. Or you can flog it at night get out and see if it’s glowing. If it’s not that it could be your fuel pump, but that exhaust is done lol.

Yeah the exhaust is shot. I hear the cat shake and it back fires. I’ll leave the fuel pump for last because that job is insane and I would have to do it since I dont want to pay a shop anymore lol.

Yeah the absolute worst job on any modern car is an interior accsess fuel pump. Those plastic Fucking rings can fuck off and die, and when your stuck in the car with the fumes while it refuses to cooperate it is damn nightmare. The accsess hole is always sharp edged, the tool never works, and it usually shears the damn teeth off. Fuck that lol.

Yeah its not fun. For the MR2 its a night mare. You have to drop the tank, rip up the interior to unplug the send unit. Make sure you dont hit any cables.

If it’s an external reroute it to somewhere that makes more sense. That isn’t going to be fun at all. You may be able to get clever and unhook the old one and leave it and plumb an new one in a better location.

Yeah its hard to find info on that. I tried looking up a carb conversion for it but I can only find AE86 guides. Those guides dont work for mr2s lol.

Getting a carb that’ll work won’t be too hard but you’ll need to get a new cam for it, that’s definitely something I’d go to an expert for.

I don’t think it’s going to make a difference either way, but it would be nice if I’m wrong. Mine’s straight piped. It’s just stupid loud.

While the gas tank is a pain in the ass, getting under the center console, taking it out, and putting it back in is pretty easy in these cars. IIRC, once the back storage box is out, it’s just six screws.

Hey another question if the car revs fine in neutral would it still be a clogged cat / exhaust that could be causing this?

cool cool. I’m going to try to remove it. Its holding on by that stupid coat hanger and a prayer.

Yeah. It’s backpressure so it’ll be hard to detect unless the engine is under load. I guess it would depend on how clogged, and they rarely clog completely. It’s basically a ceramic honeycomb, with passages about as wide as a pencil led. If it clogs they can break up, and a good impact can break some of it. You could tap on it and see if you hear anything. If anything at all is rattling around inside, it’s definitely bad. People say it has a distinct smell, but I’ve replaced multiple cats without it present. I’ve always used an ir thermometer to confirm it, AutoZone may lend one but I have no idea, they are only like 30$ though. On yours you could pull that elbow with the hole and look but the clog is probably on the other end. if the color isn’t even across the board it’s no good. Easiest way to deal with it is pull it, smash out the ceramic with a broom handle and dump and then pop the shell back on. You won’t pass emissions if that’s a concern, it will sound a bit deeper. I don’t see an after cat o2 sensor so you probably won’t throw a code. If there is one that’s a good one to use as an Air Fuel ratio gauge, as the ecu will only use those as a cat functionality test, you don’t need it, so wire it to a gauge and ignore or disable the cel for it if you can.

Awesome thanks so much! Your advice is always spot on. If you lived around philly I’d buy you a beer and a slice of pizza.

Doing some old school diagnosis on my car last night, and thinking about it a clogged cat is going to show up as a drop in manifold pressure. You could use a vac gauge and a short hose on the brake booster nipple. If it’s much below 18 idling it could be it, but retarded timing will cause that as well as other issues. You could also do a couple of pulls and provoke it, and the check your plugs to see if you are running lean to see if it’s the fuel pump.

Good idea! I wasn’t able to pull the cat off since my older brother said it would be too loud and would add to the list of reason that its “undriveable”. That’s a better way to test it. I had the timing set by a mechanic last month. But good news! I put a new fuel filter on and she ran twice as long before hesitating. Maybe the spark plugs I have don’t have a good heat range? My dad tried to help me out when I wasnt home. He changed my air filter and looked at my sparks. I took his word for it that they were ok. He just sanded them and put them back in. Maybe the gap is too big or they are fouled. My car does something like his. When I test drive it I should take a video of mine. He says his timing was off by a tooth. I’m 80% my timing was set correctly. The exhaust pops and maybe misfires when the RPMs go down from 3K to 0.
